Escargot Scares & Intrigues Me

Life’s pleasures include foreign and intimidating foods. My illustration Escargot Scares & Intrigues Me, explores the interest and fear for these strange foods. My fascination through drawing is that my mind goes down strange paths and the image creation is more of a journey than a process. So for the theme of the brain and life’s pleasures, I chose to show what my brain saw during a fictional escargot encounter. I included the table texture as I imagined myself looking down to the wooden tabletop when confronted by the delicacy escargot. As a further recoil from the event of this strange gastronomic encounter I would have been looking to doodle on any flat surface as escape and so I maintained this hand drawn style through to the end illustration.
My imagination would run wild whilst looking down at this strange item of edible garden pest. The visualisation carries on to show intrigue and depth of analysis of the snail’s body. As the overall form has been considered various separate elements begin to collude and sprout from the form. Giving the little blighter teeth was an association to enhance the fear of such a dinner feature. You can see buildings within the structure of the snail, of course these are the realisations of the snail’s home. Like extensions we carry out on our own homes, this is an expansion of the snail as it becomes more than a meal. Once it has been established that this is indeed a snail, considerations for it as an animal seep back into my mind. So further smaller creatures can be seen emerging from the dissection.
